Disney announces the main cast for their live-action Aladdin

Following recent reports that Disney was having trouble with casting a lead for their live-action Aladdin remake, the studio revealed the main cast for the film during a presentation at their D23 Expo.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, relative newcomer Mena Massoud will take on the role of Aladdin while Power Rangers star Naomi Scott has secured the role of Jasmine. The rumors of Will Smith picking up the role of the Genie from the late Robin Williams were confirmed during the presentation.

So far there are no other casting revelations for the Guy Ritchie directed adaptation. Reportedly the studio is on the look for a name actor for the villanous role of Jafar, and still casting for roles like the Sultan and Jafar’s sidekick Iago.

Aladdin will be one of the latest in a string of live-action adaptations of Disney’s previous animated films, including Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, Alice and Wonderland and more. The studio also has adaptations including The Lion King and Dumbo in the works.

The film is set to begin shooting in London in August. There is currently no release date for the film.
