Black Panther regains classic numbering & pits T’Challa against Klaw for Marvel Legacy

Before they face off on the big screen in 2018, Marvel Legacy will pit Black Panther against his classic Vibranium obsessed foe Klaw as his solo title returns to it’s classic numbering.

As revealed by Entertainment Weekly, Ta-Nehisi Coates will continue his run with the King of Wakanda and will be joined by artist Leonard Kirk as the title falls under the Legacy banner with Black Panther #166.

“I love continuity, I love past Black Panther stuff, I love bringing in history,” Coates said. “I think already in the next issue that’s about to come out, you’ll see past characters return. The climax of last “season” had all these former Black Panthers who come aid the country in fighting the rebellion. So it’s not a huge stretch for me to reach back and place him in the context of Legacy in terms of Wakanda. I don’t think it’s as big a deal for Black Panther, because he was already there. I think in the one-shot that Jason Aaron is gonna do, you’ll see explicit stuff about what’s coming and some possible events we’re talking about. Future stuff is gonna be hinted at. There’s a lot of small things that are happening in Wakanda that are connected to a bigger thing that is gonna get teased out in Jason’s story.”

The one-shot mentioned is in reference to Jason Aaron’s Marvel Legacy #1, coming out in September, which will introduce the 1,000,000 BC Avengers that includes a previous Black Panther in it’s membership.

Besides being a foe that craves the Vibranium that is important to Wakanda, Klaw’s return has personal significance for T’Challa because Klaw killed his father.

“I mean, how many of these stories are about, you killed my dad? Or my mom died, or my Uncle Ben died. Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Black Panther — so many of these stories are about being an orphan,” Coates said. “Klaw is responsible for Black Panther being an orphan, so there’s considerable animosity there.”
