Over the last few years DC Comics has offered up revamped & continuity free looks at heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Teen Titans as part of their Earth One line of original graphic novels. In 2018 it’s Green Lantern’s turn to get that treatment.
Green Lantern: Earth One Vol. 1 by artist & writer Gabriel Hardman, writer Corinna Bechko and colorist Jordan Boyd will offer up a brand new look at Hal Jordan and his will powered green ring, according to IGN.
Arriving in March, the graphic novel will tell the story of a version of Hal Jordan who is an astronaut for Ferris Galactic whose unfulfilling life of prospecting asteroids is changed when he finds a powerful green ring. In this world the ring is part of the Green Lantern Corps who were all wiped out long ago by the machine Manhunters, sending Hal on the almost impossible mission to rebuild the Corps.
“Approaching this as an Earth One story gives us the opportunity to go back to the core concept of Green Lantern and interpret it through the lens of a modern, grounded sci-fi story while still being true to the Silver Age roots of Hal Jordan,” Hardman said. “Having storyboarded Interstellar, this is an approach I’m comfortable with and have wanted to explore in comics. Realistic sci-fi is only the beginning of this story; we have something much more epic in store.”
One of those more modern touches will change Hal from being a cocky and hotheaded test pilot to a scientist who wants to discover new things.
“Hal Jordan is a smart, capable person with a space and science background who has a lot of untapped potential even before he finds the ring,” Bechko said. “That means he’s going to approach everything the ring does from the perspective of a scientist, but he’s going to employ it for action and adventure. The result for us as writers is the opportunity to fully embrace the science fiction aspects of the story in a way that would be impossible with a lot of other characters.”
Green Lantern: Earth One Vol. 1 arrives on March 20, 2018.
