For years Wade Wilson has tried to walk closer to the path of a hero, including a stint on an actual Avengers team, but following the events of Marvel’s Secret Empire event that will no longer be the case.
According to IGN, for the fall Marvel Legacy initiative Deadpool’s title will get a name change & classic numbering return with The Despicable Deadpool #287 with writer Gerry Duggan and artist Scott Koblish pitting Wade against his old friend/antagonist Cable.
“Deadpool started off as a bad guy when he appeared in New Mutants, and we’re bringing him back to those roots,” said series editor Jordan White. “Wade’s spent the last few years trying REALLY HARD to be a hero, to do the right thing. And what did it get him? A big steaming pile of… uh, tears. A steaming pile of tears. That’s a thing, right? Anyway, if that’s all he’s gonna get for all that effort… why even try?”
The reasons for Wade’s gunning for Cable have ties to stories before Secret Empire and to one of Cable’s oldest foes.
“Just before Secret Empire began Deadpool needed help to save the Preston family, and his friends weren’t immediately available — so he turned to an enemy: Stryfe,” Duggan said. “Stryfe saved four lives for him, and now Deadpool must pay his price: he has to kill 4 people for him. Cable is the first name that Stryfe gives him. Deadpool might have been able to do some damage control after Secret Empire, but now with Stryfe calling in his maker.”
