Once a pretty important piece in the growth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has taken more of a backseat role over the last few years, not appearing in any of the Marvel Studios’ films since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
If reports are true, that is about to change.
Over the Independence Day weekend some rumor began to surface around the internet that Jackson would be co-starring as Nick Fury alongside Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers for 2019’s Captain Marvel and now Deadline is seemingly confirming those rumors. According to Deadline, sources have confirmed to them that Jackson will have a role in the film.
Fury was shot and believed killed in 2014’s Captain America: Winter Soldier, before revealing to some that he was still alive and coming in to save the day with helecarriers at the climax of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Since then he hasn’t appeared, not even when the heroes fought one another in Captain America: Civil War.
With his previous appearances across the MCU, and reports that he will be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled Avengers 4, this could be part of not only bringing Fury back into the fold but wrapping up the nine-film deal that Jackson signed with the studio years ago.
Much of what comes after Phase 3 wraps up in 2019 is being kept under wraps, but there seems to be an effort to begin to move the MCU forward with new actors and younger actors as the universe approaches it’s tenth anniversary next year.
Both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are on record about likely wrapping up their parts in the MCU very soon, and the same could likely be true for many others that have been a large part of the universe over it’s almost decade of existence.
Captain Marvel will feature Larson taking on the role of Air Force pilot Carol Danvers who becomes the powerful superhero Captain Marvel. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the film is set for a March 8, 2019 release.
