Note: Do not read further if you don’t want to be spoiled about Batman #24!!!!
Since taking over the title with 2016’s DC Rebirth, Tom King & his various artistic companions have not only put Batman/Bruce Wayne through the wringer against the likes of Bane & others but they’ve also tried to really dig deep into what makes the character tick & keep going.
Following the recent events of four-part crossover with The Flash, called The Button, Bruce Wayne is at a crossroads and has made a very big decision about his future.
That decision is asking Selina Kyle/Catwoman to marry him, according to USA Today.
Bruce and Selina have been the ultimate ‘will they, won’t they’ style couple many times over the last 75-years. They’ve been married in various alternate universes, but in the main DC titles their relationship has never gotten that far, mostly settling on a more casual situation.
“I want people to go home and be like, ‘Should she marry him? Should she say yes?,'” King said. “There’s a whole conversation that could come out of this.”
During the proposal, Batman presents Catwoman with a diamond that he has kept secret for decades and proclaims his love for her and the need for her in his life.
This move is likely connected to his meeting the Flashpoint version of his father Thomas Wayne, who was the Batman in the Flashpoint world, during The Button story. That meeting left Bruce very shaken as his father wanted him to quit being Batman because ha had done enough, he wanted his son to be happy.
“Everyone’s done vengeance, everyone’s done ‘The night is so dark,’ ” King said. “Giving Batman more pain doesn’t reveal anything about his character because he’s taken as much pain as he can. But giving him love and joy, that combines with the tragedy of his past into something new and never done before.”
While there have been other women that Bruce has been connected to over the years, the one who has best been his match is Selina.
“Catwoman is someone who’s seen his pain and has been through stuff as bad as he has been through,” King said. “She says, ‘Look, both of us are broken, but we can be broken together.’ ”
While the question will be asked in the issue, apparently the answer won’t be so easily given in the next issue. In issue 25, King said that Batman will tell Catwoman that he wants to first tell her about his darkest moment before she answers his proposal.
“It’s like, ‘You think you know me, but you don’t know me until this,’ ” King says. “The actual answer will come after he reveals something he’s never revealed to anyone, and she has to decide whether that’s good or bad.”
Batman #24 is out tomorrow, June 07, and Batman #25 is out on June 21.
