Fox casts newcomer Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar for New Mutants

The casting of the main young mutants for Fox’s X-Men spinoff New Mutants has been completed.

Fox’s international search for their diverse young cast came to a conclusion with the signing of relative newcomer Blu Hunt to take on the role of the Native American telepath Danielle Moonstar/Mirage, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hunt’s resume includes a few episodes of The CW’s The Originals series.

Based upon the initial reports of the film’s cast this means all five of the teens have been found for the Josh Boone directed film. The cast now features Hunt, Split star Anya Taylor-Joy as the teleporting sorceress Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane who struggles to reconcile her strong religious beliefs and her ability to turn into a wolf, Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball the Kentucky farm boy who becomes nigh invulnerable when he blasts through the air and 13 Reasons Why star Henry Zaga as the Brazilian self-proclaimed ladies man with solar based powers Roberto da Costa/Sunspot.

There were rumors that the alien tecnhorganic being Warlock would be featured in the film, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

Rosario Dawson is also reportedly in talks to take on the role of Doctor Cecilia Reyes, a mutant that  creates a protective bio force fields around herself. The role is said to be a mentor style one alongside the younger main cast.

Boone’s film is following the trend of Deadpool and Logan in the sense that it will shy away from the slightly more formulaic trappings of the main X-Men films. Instead Boone described the movie as a horror film, with no costumes or supervillains to be found.

Which makes sense with the reports that the nightmare creature known as the Demon Bear will be the threat the teens face. New Mutants is said to focus on the five teens having to learn to deal with their mutant abilities as they escape from a secret facility that had been holding them against their will.

Casting of Moonstar was key for the studio since the story is said be focused on the aforementioned Demon Bear. The classic 80’s Demon Bear storyline that Boone is said to be pulling from heavily focused on Moonstar and her connection to the demonic creature that might have been what killed her parents.
