It’s been a few weeks since Maisie Williams & Anya Taylor-Joy were announced as the first cast members for Fox’s New Mutants film. Since then there hasn’t been any real casting announcements.
That could be about to change.
While there is no firm announcement at this point, Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton is reportedly in talks to take on the part of the southern high-flying mutant Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Cannonball was one of the original members of the New Mutants in the comics and went on to be one of the most successful as he’s had long stints with other teams including various stints with X-Force, the X-Men and even various Avengers teams over the years. His codename comes from the fact that his mutant ability allows him to propel himself into the air just like a cannonball, and the blast field that surrounds him while flying makes him nigh invulnerable.
Currently Taylor-Joy is set to play Illyana Rasputin/Magik who is the little sister of Colossus and has sorcery powers along with stepping discs that allow teleportation, and Williams is set to play the religious wolf shifting character Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane. The rest of the teen main characters are supposed to include Danielle Moonstar/Mirage, Roberto da Costa/Sunspot and the alien techno organic being known as Warlock.
Recently there were reports that Rosario Dawson is in talks to play Doctor Cecilia Reyes, a character that creates protective bio force fields around herself. The role is said to be a mentor style one alongside the younger main cast.
The Josh Boone directed film has been said to be one that will follow the trend of Deadpool and Logan in the sense that it will shy away from the slightly more formulaic trappings of the main X-Men films. Instead Boone described the movie as a horror film, with no costumes or supervillains to be found within in which makes sense with the reports that the nightmare creature known as the Demon Bear will be the threat the teens face.
New Mutants is set for an April 13, 2018 release.
