Vanity Fair has now released their dense Star Wars: The Last Jedi cover story, and there are a ton of nuggets in their to pick through. Among that information comes the first looks at some of the new characters joining the franchise, and some bits about just what some characters we know will be up to when they return to the big screen this winter.
One of the big things revealed in the article is the first look at & information about the characters played by Laura Dern and Benecio Del Toro. Dern plays Vice Admiral Holdo a character described as “a prominent officer in the Resistance,” while Del Toro’s character goes unnamed in the film but has been called “DJ” by the cast & crew with director Rian Johnson saying “You’ll see—there’s a reason why we call him DJ.”
One of the plot reveals has John Boyega’s Finn on a mission behind enemy lines with Resistance maintenence worker Rose Tico, played by Kelly Marie Tran, a mission that takes them to many places including a brand new planet Johnson is adding to Star Wars canon. That is the world of Canto Bight, described as a Monte Carlo like environment where all the rich folks in the universe gather.
While Finn is handling that mission alongside Rose, Poe Dameron (Oscar Issacs) will be back in action in an X-Wing training a new gunner named Paige (Veronica Ngo) who happens to be Rose’s sister.
Also among the reveals, Johnson also confirmed that the talk in The Force Awakens about Luke searching for a Jedi Temple is true and that is what he has found on the planet, Ahch-To, where Rey finds him at the end of that film. There is a Jedi village upon the planet where Luke has been living amongst the indigenous race of caretakers, a group of aliens that Johnson is leaving mysterious other than to say that they aren’t like the Ewoks.
