Saw Gerrera isn’t the only familiar face making their presence known in the second half of Star Wars Rebels third season. After appearing as a hologram and repeating a warning throughout the mid-season return trailer, an older Obi-Wan Kenobi makes his presence known, and looks to be having one final battle against Darth Maul in the process.
While a younger version of Kenobi has appeared in animated form during the Clone Wars cartoons and in the Jedi Holocron hologram version during Star Wars Rebels, this will be the first time he’ll appear as the older version that was played by Alec Guinness in Star Wars: A New Hope.
It makes sense for them to have this face to face now, where Maul wants his final revenge against the man that sliced him in half almost thirty years before in Star Wars: The Phantom Menance, as the events of this series are just a few years away from the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: A New Hope.
The confrontation is likely to be something saved for the third season finale, with plenty of events regarding Saw Gerrera, the growth of the rebellion, the Empire’s search for a traitor in their midst, Grand Admiral Thrawn’s plan to take down the Rebels, Sabine’s recruitment of Mandalorians ans use of the Darksaber, and so much more.
Star Wars Rebels returns on January 7 on Disney XD.
