Some people want to be Batman, and some people might actually be Batman.
Inspired by his love for the caped crusader and by the video game Batman: Arkham Origins, costume designer Julian Checkley from Ireland created a Batman costume that comes with 23 actual functioning gadgets within the overall costume. A feat that has made him one of the latest to be inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most functional gadgets on a single piece of cosplay.
According to the video from Guinness, in order to be considered for the record the gadgets must be fully integrated into the suit and cannot be separate, carried gadgets. Meaning that just like Batman himself, Checkley stuffed that utility belt full of all those amazing little gadgets.
Those gadgets included everything from an under the wrist gas dispenser, to a fireball shooter to actual working magnetic bat tracking devices, folding batarangs, a bat-cam, a gauntlet flashlight, ball bearing grenades and many more. There was even a bat flask for that moment you need a little bit of liquid courage before leaping into the fray against Gotham’s worst.
“There were many long hours trying devising the gadgets and finding ways to store them on the suit. They are classic gadgets but also some are specific to Batman: Arkham Origins,” Checkley said. “I am immensely proud of my Guinness World Records title and to be part of the Gamer’s Edition is just the next level.”
Creating costumes since he was a child, starting with a papier-mâché Darth Vader helmet, Checkley has spent his life creating various costumes and pieces for himself and others and even took his skill into working for feature films and television as the founder of Order 66 Creatures and Effects.
