Greg Berlanti and company are kicking things up a notch for the sophomore season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. In the first season they had a tough time running through time trying to defeat the immortal Vandal Savage, so for season two, the team of super-heroes will face off against the first major team of super-villains.
Announced at San Diego Comic Con, John Barrowman’s Malcolm Merlyn, Neal McDonough’s Damien Darhk, Matt Letscher’s Reverse-Flash and Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold, a former member of the Legends team, will come together to form the Legion of Doom. If the name is familiar, that’s because it’s been used in various DC Comic books and previous TV series like Challenge of the Superfriends.
The move explains why Barrowman and Miller previously signed new contracts that make them series regulars across the entire The CW-Berlanti DC Universe of shows. Letscher only appeared a few times as Reverse Flash in the first two seasons of The Flash but will now be a series regular for Legends of Tomorrow, while McDonough will have a recurring role.
“For season two of Legends, we decided that the perfect antagonist for TV’s first-ever team of superheroes would be TV’s first-ever team of supervillains, recruited from the ranks of Arrow and The Flash’s deadliest adversaries,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim said. “Being huge fans of the Challenge of the Superfriends, we’ve come to call this group our ‘Legion of Doom.’”
It was also announced that new heroes will join the fray as well as the series looks to flesh out the Justice Society of America that was mentioned in the finale. Patrick J. Adams will return as Rex Tyler/Hourman and will be joined by other DC Comics members of the JSA Obsidian, Stargirl and Dr. Mid-Nite. There are no actors cast for any of those roles yet.
Recently Caity Lotz, who plays White Canary on the series, shared a look at the cover of the script for the second episode which is titled “Justice Society of America” suggesting that at least some of that team will appear rather quickly.
Stephen Amell will also appear during the season two premiere as Mayor Oliver Queen. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns to The CW on October 13.
