A new Batman villain will rise in the upcoming third season of Fox’s Gotham as Deadline is reporting that the series has cast Australian actor Benedict Samuel in the series regular role of Jervis Tetch, otherwise known as the Mad Hatter. Samuel recently appeared in the recurring role of The Wolf in season six of AMC’s The Walking Dead.
Jervis Tetch is a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone’s guess just how far down the rabbit hole he’s willing to go in order to find her.
Tetch originally debuted in 1949 in Batman #49, co-created by Batman co-creator Bill Finger, and started off as a more comical villain like most of the Golden Age characters before getting a darker reimagining during the 1970s.
The Mad Hatter follows the Penguin, Mister Freeze and Doctor Hugo strange as bigtime Batman villains that have made their debut in the series which serves as an origin story for both James Gordon and Bruce Wayne years before the iconic characters became the police commissioner and bat themed vigilante cleaning up the streets of Gotham.
Gotham returns to Fox on September 19.
