The cast of The CW’s Supergirl continues to expand for season two as the series has added Floriana Lima in the role of Detective Maggie Sawyer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lima will be joining the cast as a series regular.
Maggie Sawyer was introduced into the world of Superman in 1987 by John Byrne as the captain of the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit, a department that deals with metahuman threats. Becoming a major supporting character, Maggie was revealed to be a lesbian in the Superman titles and became one of the few openly gay characters in mainstream comics at that time. In the 2000s the character moved over to become an important supporting character in the Batman line of comics where she was a Captain in the Gotham City Police Department and was romantically involved with Batwoman for some time.
For Supergirl Maggie will be a detective for the National City Police Department and will be taking a special interest in cases involving aliens, a possible precursor to introducing the Special Crimes Unit at some point.
Sawyer was one of five characters that TVLine said the producers were casting for Supergirl back in June. Snapper Carr, another of those reported characters, was just recently cast with Ian Gomez coming in to play the character who will be the new Editor-in-Chief for CatCo.
Other additions so far for the new season include former Wonder Woman Lynda Carter as the President of the United States, and Teen Wolf actor Tyler Hoechlin playing the recurring role of Clark Kent/Superman.
Supergirl returns for it’s second season, moving from CBS to The CW, on October 10.
